The SEO landscape just crossed a massive threshold. A new study by SparkToro and Similarweb reveals that 68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a single click during the first four months of 2026.
This is a notable 7.56-point jump from 2024, meaning that nearly seven out of ten users now find their answers directly on the search engine results page (SERP) without navigating to external websites.
What is driving the drop in clicks?
The decline in user click-through rates (CTR) comes down to how efficiently Google answers queries on-platform. The total share of searches generating at least one click, whether to organic results, paid ads, or Google-owned properties like Maps and YouTube dropped by 22.9% since 2024.
Instead of leaving the platform, users are refining their queries internally. The study found a 7.2 percentage point increase in searches that simply led to another follow-up Google search.
The primary catalyst behind this behaviour is AI Overviews
AI Overviews now show up in over 20% of Google queries and when they appear, standard organic click-through rates plummet by nearly 60%. Meanwhile, Google’s new AI Mode is scaling rapidly, surpassing 1 billion monthly users at I/O 2026, which is bound to accelerate zero-click trends further.
With Google keeping traffic to itself, traditional search engine optimisation strategies are no longer enough to sustain historic web traffic levels, so a shift in focus is now necessary for a business to be found:
- Build On-Platform Awareness: Invest heavily in brand recognition and digital PR so users actively search for your brand by name.
- Target High-Intent Keywords: Focus content on branded searches, local business queries and transactional keywords that inherently require a click to fulfill an action.
- Diversify Channels: Expand your footprint to the social and community platforms where your specific audience already spends time.
The zero-click era is officially here and success now relies on building a brand that users seek out directly.
