The launch had attracted a lot of press coverage and commentary about the dawn of a new era of online search.

According to Microsoft, this launch will help people get more from search and the web as “AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search”.

Bing and Edge have been combined into to the new Bing, bringing together chat, browsing and search, which delivers:

  • Better search
  • Complete answers
  • A new chat experience
  • A ‘creative spark’
  • New Microsoft Edge experience

Microsoft has teamed up with OpenAI to reinvent search with AI. The new Bing experience is a culmination of four technical breakthroughs:

Next-generation OpenAI model
The new Bing is running on a new, next-generation OpenAI large language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT and customised specifically for search. It takes key learnings and advancements from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 – and it is even faster, more accurate and more capable.

Microsoft Prometheus model
Microsoft have developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows it to best leverage its power. They call this collection of capabilities and techniques the Prometheus model. This combination provides more relevant, timely and targeted results, with improved safety.

Applying AI to core search algorithm
They’ve also applied the AI model to its core Bing search ranking engine, which led to the largest jump in relevance in two decades. It claims that with this AI model, even basic search queries are more accurate and more relevant.

New user experience
They’re reimagining how Users interact with search, browser and chat by pulling them into a unified experience, which its claimed will unlock a completely new way to interact with the web.

From February 7th, the new Bing has been available in a limited preview on desktops, and everyone can visit Bing.com to try sample queries and sign up for the waitlist. Microsoft has been scaling the preview to millions in the following weeks.
